Review: Sonic Mania

"I feel like I'm five years old again!"

Disclaimer: Sonic The Hedgegod 2 was the first videogame I ever played or owned. I am a massive fan of the oldschool 2D Sonic games.

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY! IT'S SONIC 1-3 BUT MORE!

It looks just like the old Sonic games I remember from childhood. It sounds just like them, too! And it plays just the right way, with all the tricks and spindashes and jumps and loops and...

Wait, was this supposed to be an informative review?

Oh, right...

Sonic Mania is, essentially, a remastering of the old Sonic The Hedgehog games one through three, with added polish, new effects and some minor gameplay tweaks. It represents that 'golden age' of 2D console platformers, a time which many gamers, such as myself, remember fondly. As such, an honest review of this game might be difficult to come by.

On one hand, people like myself, are fanboys. No way around it. This game made me feel six years old again, and in a good way. I can't help but recommend it.

However, if you have no nostalgia for this period of games, if you never played the old Sonic games, you might find Sonic Mania to be quite lackluster as an experience. Outdated, pixellated, simplistic running and jumping. Easy to play, difficult to master.

Me, I'm going to go back into this game, over and over. I just know it.

Playtime: 4+ hours (Single playthrough, didn't get all the chaos emeralds)
